Spotlight: Graphic designer Joanne Lau

November 23rd, 2012

Every week, the Federation of Students will profile an outstanding club, volunteer, or part-time staff member in the Spotlight series.

Spotlight on: Joanne Lau

It was a tweet that led Joanne Lau to a job she loves with the Federation of Students. “I was on Twitter and it suddenly popped up that Feds was looking for a designer,” she recalls. “I thought; why not give it a try? The idea of being paid to do something I really enjoy, like designing, seemed amazing. I was so happy when I got hired.”

Lau, who is a senior in the Math and Business double degree program, says her only previous involvement with the Federation of Students was as a member of the UW Photo Club. Working for Feds made her realize how much is happening on campus.

“I design posters and ads, so I’m aware of events and promotions,” she explains. “I definitely make use of this! Buying and selling textbooks from Feds Used Books has saved me so much money! I love going to The Bombshelter Pub for a quick bite. I also love the concerts and shows that are held throughout the term! I’ve been given opportunities for experiences I wouldn't have had otherwise.”

A talented graphic designer, Lau plans to pursue a career in marketing after she graduates. First, however, she wants to teach English in Korea.
