Sustainable Campus Initiative
Sustainable Campus Initiative (previously named the uWaterloo Sustainability Project) is a Federation of Students' service that is run by dedicated student volunteers. It provides many environmental services to the University of Waterloo campus and its surrounding community.
Its primary activities involve education and advocacy that help bring about positive behavioural and social changes in the community. SCI provides volunteer opportunities to over 200 students every term with projects such as workshops, rallies, social events, performances, fundraisers, and infrastructure and operational improvements. It also provides environmental consulting services to students and various organizations at the University of Waterloo and in Waterloo Region. Check out the Fall 2014 Green Guide here.
Planning an event? SCI can help you make it eco-friendly! Link to application form here.
The purpose of SCI is to:
- To address and increase awareness of environmental issues on campus;
- To act as a liaison with all organizations that are concerned about the environment, and to assist and participate as appropriate; and
- To encourage and support the formation of student chapters of professional environmental organizations.
Our values represent the philosophy and beliefs behind SCI organization, guiding all of our decisions and actions.
- Our People – We attract, develop, and retain enthusiastic and passionate students in order to help them realize their full potential.
- A Learning Community - We provide an open, honest, diverse, and safe environment that promotes learning through unique first-hand experiences.
- Excellence & Integrity - We put our best foot forward in all that we do, while being ethically responsible and honest. We inspire trust by saying what we mean, matching our behaviours to our words and taking responsibility for our actions.
- Financial Responsibility - We ensure proper and responsible management of our funding sources and spend with care and due diligence.
SCI lives up to these expectations through four Working Groups that focus on different facets of sustainability on the uWaterloo Campus and in the surrounding community.

Fairtrade Campus Designation
SCI is working with Engineers without Borders UW chapter to achieve a Fairtrade Campus Designation for the University of Waterloo. Designation would include meeting certain requirements of having Fairtrade certified goods available on campus, a steering committee, and holding events. The Fairtrade team plans several events throughout the year and continues working on the logistics of achieving the Designation.
UW Campus Compost
Campus Compost is a student run initiative serving the University of Waterloo. Currently there are compost bins located throughout the Environment and Arts Buildings. Please use them and show that there is a demand for composting on campus. If you are looking to rent a composting bin for your upcoming event, please contact us at the email below.
Currently, SCI is organizing a second-hand clothing sale for Fall 2016. Volunteers are needed to help organize and run the event as well as assist in operations for the management of the donated clothing. SCI has formally proposed a second-hand clothing store for approval.
